clinical thermometer a finely calibrated thermometer for determining the temperature of the body, usually placed under the tongue, in the armpit, or in the rectum clinical thermometer [′klin·ə·kəl thər′mäm·əd·ər] (engineering) A thermometer used to accurately determine the temperature of the human body; the most common type is a mercury-in-glass thermometer, in which the mercury expands from a bulb into a capillary tube past a constriction that prevents the mercury from receding back into the bulb, so that the thermometer registers the maximum temperature attained.
