1.thud - Yet another metasyntactic variable (see foo). It is reported that at CMU from the mid-1970s the canonical series of these was "foo", "bar", "thud", "blat".
2.thud - Rare term for the hash character, "#" (ASCII 35). See ASCII for other synonyms.

NASA seemed happy to clunk along with its $16 billion a year, doing what it had been doing since the 1970s: not much.
I've talked with CPAs who are proud they still use Windows 98; while that's a quaint choice, it's a miracle so many Windows applications actually still clunk along on it.
It made a big clunk, poked a hole in the rubber bellows around the tie rod, and must have also stressed the seal on the steering rack--because when they called me out to check sticky red power steering fluid was puddling on the driveway.
