cluster of galaxies |
Also found in: Wikipedia | 0.02 sec. |
cluster of galaxiesGravitationally bound grouping of galaxies, numbering from the hundreds to the tens of thousands. Large clusters of galaxies often exhibit extensive X-ray emission from intergalactic gas heated to tens of millions of degrees. Also, interactions of galaxies with each other and with the intracluster gas may deplete galaxies of their own interstellar gas. The Milky Way Galaxy belongs to the Local Group, which lies on the outskirts of the Virgo Cluster. How to thank TFD for its existence? To find the galaxy, Daniel Schaerer of the Geneva Observatory in Sauverny, Switzerland, and his colleagues examined the central region of a relatively nearby cluster of galaxies, Abell 1835. A massive cluster of galaxies two billion light years away acts as magnifying lens, bending space and revealing hidden galaxies five times further away. That's about the same time that Keel and his colleagues began studying a cluster of galaxies called Abell 2125, located some 1 billion light-years from Earth. |
