Compartment

a part of a forest, bounded by cut patches or natural borders (such as rivers). Compartments may be divided naturally (borders as natural features), artificially (borders as patches cut perpendicularly to one another), or in a mixed fashion (natural boundaries supplemented by cut patches). The size of a compartment, which can range from several tenths of a hectare to several hundred hectares, is determined by an appraisal system, based on the use of the wood. Each compartment has a permanent number. The enumeration of the compartments in a forest proceeds from northwest to southeast.
