consultant

A person who acts as an advisor to users or to the technical staff. Consultants are available for all aspects of the computer industry, including electronic circuit design, information systems analysis and software development. In a business environment, consultants are often used to create the functional specifications from which vendors can respond. Consultants typically come from third party consulting firms, but the title is also used for internal specialists. See job descriptions.

a. a senior physician, esp a specialist, who is asked to confirm a diagnosis or treatment or to provide an opinion
b. a physician or surgeon holding the highest appointment in a particular branch of medicine or surgery in a hospital

(job)consultant - A person who facilitates organisational change and/or provides subject matter expertise on technical, functional and business topics during development or implementation. Consultants perform business requirements analysis, recommends selection of packaged software, develop proposals for consulting services and manage implementation projects at client sites. They provides expert knowledge of products such as SAP R/3, PeopleSoft, HRMS/Financials, and SmartStream.
