It is home to hundreds of species of plants including the largest stand of Joshua trees in the world, cholla cactus, California juniper, desert primrose, Mojave yucca, pinon pine, wildflowers galore, and the creosote bush, which can live up to 10,000 years in the desert.
The two biologists devised a system of interlocking, partially transparent growth boxes that allowed them to observe interactions between the roots of two desert shrubs: the common creosote bush Larrea tridentata and the so-called burro weed Ambrosia dumosa.
This area is home to two of the oldest plant species on earth: bristle cone pine (Pinus aristata), growing in the White Mountains and estimated to be 4,900 years old; and creosote bush (Larrea tridentata), some of whose self-made clones are more than 10,000 years of age.
