Using the general public to do research or other work, which may or may not be paid. For example, Amazon.com's Mechanical Turk (www.mturk.com) enables people to enter a task description and an amount they will pay for its completion. A body of workers (the Turks; the crowd) peruse the job list and fulfill the tasks. InnoCentive (www.innocentive.com) enlists scientists worldwide to do research for pharmaceutical, biotech, agribusiness and other companies. Awards are issued for solutions that best meet requirements. |

Todd also threw out a number of new words--at least new to me: crowdsourcing (I still haven't grasped that one); linkbait; frenemies (making friends out of enemies such as Google or even your competitors, which is related to her statement, "Partnerships are the new patents"); and media tapas (information by the slice). Crowdcasting is the intersection of broadcasting and crowdsourcing which uses a combination of push and pull strategies to first engage an audience to build a network of participants. |
