data rate

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
data rate
(1) The data transfer speed in bytes per second (bytes/sec) within the computer or between a peripheral device and the computer. See transfer rate and space/time.

(2) The data transfer speed of a digital audio or video file. For example, music files are commonly compressed in the MP3 format at 128 Kbps, which means that each second of audio uses 131,072 bits (128 x 1024). Also called "bit rate." See binary values.

(3) The transmission speed of a network. For example, 100Base-T Ethernet is rated at 100 Mbps (megabits per second). Also called "bit rate." See space/time.
data rate [′dad·ə ‚rāt]
(communications)
The number of digital bits per second that are recorded or retrieved from a data storage device during the transfer of a large data block.

(communications, unit)data rate - (Or "data ransfer rate", "transmission rate") The amount of data transferred per second by a communications channel or a computing or storage device.

Data rate is measured in units of bits per second (written "b/s" or "bps"), bytes per second (Bps), or baud.

When applied to data rate, the multiplier prefixes "kilo-", "mega-", "giga-", etc. (and their abbreviations, "k", "M", "G", etc.) always denote powers of 1000. For example, 64 kbps is 64,000 bits per second. This contrasts with units of storage where they stand for powers of 1024, e.g. 1 KB = 1024 bytes.
