de Tolnay, Charles Erich (b. [Vagujhelyi] Karoly Tolnai) (1899– ) art historian, painter; born in Budapest, Hungary. He studied at the Universities of Berlin (1920–21), Frankfurt (1922), and Vienna (Ph.D. 1925), and continued postdoctoral studies at the University of Rome. He emigrated to America (1939), and became a citizen (1945). He worked as a lecturer in art and archaeology for many institutions in Europe and America, such as the Sorbonne, (1934–39), the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1939–48), in Germany, and in Italy, where he eventually settled. As a scholar he is most noted for his History and Technique of Old Master Drawings (1943) and for his six-volume study of Michelangelo (1943–67). How to thank TFD for its existence?
