ThanatosAncient Greek personification of death. He was the son of Nyx, goddess of night, and brother to Hypnos, god of sleep. He appeared to humans to carry them off to the underworld when the time allotted to them by the Fates had expired. Thanatos was once defeated by Heracles, who wrestled him to save the life of Alcestis, and he was tricked by Sisyphus, who wanted a second chance at life. He writes (discussing the mind-set of van Gogh's killer) that "the death wish in the name of a high cause, a god, or a great leader is something that has appealed to confused and resentful young men through the ages and is certainly not unique to Islam. Then it makes a loony detour into Death Wish territory and gets a lot more entertaining, even if plausibility gets some what strained. The reaction to that was so strong Robertson had to call a press conference to deny that he had a death wish against any justices. |
