descender
The part of lower case characters g, j, p, q and y that fall below the line. Sometimes these characters are displayed and printed with shortened descenders in order to fit into a smaller character cell, making them difficult to read. See typeface.

(graphic arts)
The segment of certain letters which extends below the general level of cross-alignment with other letters; for example, the lower part of “g” or “y.”

(text)descender - A lowercase letter that extends below the base line, such as "g", "j", or "p". Also used to denote the part of the letter extending below the base line. Compare ascender.

As reported earlier, among Wednesday’s decliners was Ticker Trax planetary prospect BioCryst Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: BCRX, Stock Forum), which fell 10.
25 Kyodo Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday after investors snapped up recent decliners such as financials and auto issues and were also cheered by an overnight gain on Wall Street.
Decliners were led by STARBUCKS, off 3-1/8 to close at 36-7/8.
