découpage (dā'kpäzh`), any process of decorating surfaces in which paper cutouts made of new materials completely cover the surface. These cutouts are attached to the work by pasting or gluing. The simple techniques involved in this form of collage collage [Fr.,=pasting], technique in art consisting of cutting and pasting natural or manufactured materials to a painted or unpainted surface—hence, a work of art in this medium.

Cut out your paper, pictures, fabric, or other decoupage material and lay them out on the table in the pattern that you will glue them onto your object.
