An arrangement of fortifications that minimizes the effect of frontal or enfilading fire and plunging or reverse fire.

For the reduction of the casualties caused by the Infantry and Artillery fire, the enemy widely used defilades and artificial covers and, as consequence, first the issue arose concerning the Artillery fire against the out-of-sight target for the gun-layer, then it was followed by the indirect fire issue, Captain K.
If the ground is uneven--has defilades, hills and ravines that could offer added protection from the effects of indirect fire--the FSO may suggest a "Cease load" on a target closer to the objective than normally would be safe.
