dengue

or breakbone fever or dandy fever

Infectious, disabling mosquito-borne fever. Other symptoms include extreme joint pain and stiffness, intense pain behind the eyes, a return of fever after brief pause, and a characteristic rash. Dengue is caused by a virus carried by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, usually A. aegypti, which also carries yellow fever. There are four strains of virus; infection with one type does not confer immunity to the remaining three. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Patients should be isolated during the first three days, when mosquitoes can pick up the disease from them. Prevention relies on mosquito control.

dengue [′deŋ·gē]
(medicine)
An acute viral disease of humans characterized by fever, rash, prostration, and lymphadenopathy; transmitted by the mosquitoAedes aegypti. Also known as breakbone fever; dandy fever.

Dengue

(from a corruption of the English word “dandy,” after the swaying gait of the patient), an acute viral disease characterized by fever, meningitis, inflammation of the joints, and a rash. It is recorded in countries with a tropical climate (the Mediterranean region, Australia, the Philippines, New Guinea, and the Panama Canal Zone). The disease is not found in the USSR. The source of infection is an infected individual and several species of monkeys. The principal carrier is the mosquito Aëdes aegypti. Preventive measures include the extermination of mosquitoes, drainage of swamps, isolation of patients, and quarantine to prevent the transmittal of the disease to countries that are free of it.
