This pattern of growth and the adherence to surrounding structures mimic carcinoma (figure, A), although there is no vascular invasion or desmoplastic reaction.
Most ductal adenocarcinomas are well to moderately differentiated and, in contrast to acinar tumors, secrete mucin and elicit a desmoplastic stromal reaction.
Several recent studies also implicate CTGF in tumor progression, including tumor cell survival and metastasis, in which CTGF is a key link in the communication between tumor cells and their stroma (the area surrounding the tumor) during the desmoplastic reaction.
