digital TV transition

    0.04 sec.

digital TV transition

Refers to the switch from analog to digital TV by all TV stations in the U.S. at midnight February 17, 2009. All older TVs that pick up analog signals over-the-air with a set-top or roof antenna will no longer work unless they have been fitted with a digital converter box (set-top box).

Cable and Satellite Is Good Until 2012
Subscribers to cable and satellite TV services are not affected by the switch. They are closed systems that are already sending analog signals to your TV. Due to orders from the FCC, the services will provide analog TV until 2012 by converting the programming that was switched to originate in digital back to analog for its customers.

Government Rebates
The U.S. government provides two $40 rebate coupons per household for purchasing converter boxes, which can be obtained online at www.dtv2009.gov or by calling 1-888-388-2009. See DTV and 700 MHz spectrum.
