Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Acronyms, Wikipedia | 0.03 sec. |
dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)Colourless, nearly odourless liquid organic compound. It mixes in all proportions with water, ethanol, and most organic solvents and dissolves a wide variety of compounds (but not aliphatic hydrocarbons). It readily penetrates skin and other tissues and is used to carry drugs and antitoxins through the skin. It has many nonmedical uses—as a solvent, cleaner, pesticide, paint stripper, hydraulic fluid, preservative of cells at low temperatures, and metal complexing agent. Other candidates for therapeutic agents include N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), dimercapto succinic acid (DMSA, also thought to be a useful chelating agent), magnesium sulfate (sometimes administered through the skin with a patch), taurine, and methylsulfonyl methane (MSM). Dimethylsulfoxide and phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (TPA) were obtained from Aldrich Chemical Co. To incorporate phytic acid into red blood cells, the researchers bathe the cells in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), a small molecule that rushes into cells. |
