Literature shows that the main products of thermal degradation of NR are isoprene, dipentene, and p-menthene [24].
They are composed of a bevy of chemicals, including chlorine bleaching agents and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and dipentene which have been linked to cancer and brain damage.
In figure 3 isoprene is the first large peak, dipentene elutes at about 11 minutes, and the trimers, tetramers and pentamers can be seen as bunches of peaks at about 20, 30 and 37 minutes respectively.
