direct access (1) See Microsoft DirectAccess.(2) The ability to read or write a specific storage location without having to go through any locations before or after it. Generally synonymous with "random access." Magnetic disks, optical discs and memories (RAMs, ROMs, PROMs, etc.) are the major direct access devices. See direct access method. The files stored on these devices may also be organized using direct access methods such as indexes. Just as a disk index points to a storage location on the disk, a file index points to a location within the file (see random file). See magnetic disk and RAM.
