direct tide [də¦rekt ′tīd]

(geophysics)

A gravitational solar or lunar tide in the ocean or atmosphere which is in phase with the apparent motions of the attracting body, and consequently has its local maxima directly under the tide-producing body, and on the opposite side of the earth.
