| Simon Jones, who played Arthur on radio and TV (and who makes a delectable cameo appearance here), was able to invest Arthur's profound discombobulation with a strong point of view. The formal logic of such spatial discombobulation shows up most readily in the spare outdoor works Jonas produced in the late 1960s and early '70s. Mathers's horizontal, paneled format allows for wide vistas as well as for comic-strip-style progression (one four-panel sequence captures perfectly the discombobulation of being tumbled by a wave). |
