If lined with impermeable clays, or filled with brickearth with a clay content sufficient to prevent percolation, the Chiltern dolines formed semi-permanent lakes (Catt et al.
The mechanisms invoked by Catt (1978) to explain the formation of the brickearths imply that the dolines filled gradually, if somewhat episodically, over fairly long periods (cf.
Both analyses, then, suggest that the Rackley and Cottages dolines were probably active during the same warm stage, but that the majority of the Rackley sequence provides evidence for events prior to the formation of the Cottages Site floor.
Given the modern geological interpretation of these site as infilled dolines, knowledge of how the brickearth was dug, and the descriptions from recent excavations of sloping strata, it is far more parsimonious to see Smith's eight 'floors' not as separate artefact-bearing horizons, but the same sloping, undulatory implementiferous stratum intercepted at different points on the stepped face of the working pit.

The Wola live in small houses scattered along the sides of their dolines and valleys, in areas of extensive cane grass land, the watersheds between which are heavily forested.
The geology of the Wola region lends itself to the exploitation of natural barriers, being limestone karst country in which occur sinkholes, cliffs, collapsed dolines and broken rock rubble.
Old as well as active dolines or sinkholes dot the Berry campus.
In this way, Tilley compares the Maiden Castle bank barrow to the Chesil Beach, and barrows are inverted dolines.
