drag-cup generator [′drag ‚kəp ′jen·ə‚rād·ər]
(engineering)
A type of tachometer which uses eddy currents and functions in control systems; it consists of two stationary windings, positioned so as to have zero coupling, and a nonmagnetic metal cup, which is revolved by the source whose speed is to be measured; one of the windings is used for excitation, inducing eddy currents in the rotating cup. Also known as drag-cup tachometer.
