dwell 1. a regular pause in the operation of a machine 2. a flat or constant-radius portion on a linear or rotary cam enabling the cam follower to remain static for a brief time dwell [dwel] (design engineering) That part of a cam that allows the cam follower to remain at maximum lift for a period of time. (electricity) The number of degrees through which the distributor cam rotates from the time that the contact points close to the time that they open again. Also known as dwell angle.
