A word of caution: Conditions involving neurological or cognitive impairment often require a formal evaluation of drinking, chewing, and swallowing (called a dysphagia evaluation) by a speech-language pathologist prior to dietary modifications. It is imperative that the SLP, as well as the director of nursing and other key members of the caregiving team, have a solid understanding of dysphagia and appropriate treatment and management techniques specific to the disorder. |
