Typically offering better quality than the earbuds that come with many digital music players, earphones do not cover the entire ear as do regular headphones.(2) Small headphones that are inserted into the ear canal. Also called "ear monitors," earphones have been used for years by performers on stage to better hear certain instruments as well as cues. They are also available with custom-molded inserts like hearing aids. See earbuds and headphones.
