Elan’ 

an urban-type settlement, the administrative center of Elan’ Raion, Volgograd Oblast, RSFSR. Located at the confluence of the Elan’ and Tersa rivers (Don basin). Elan’ is a railroad station (Elan’-Kamyshinskaia) on the Balashov-Kamyshin line. Population, 15,000 (1970).

Elan’ is the site of a butter and cheese plant, a meat and poultry combine, a repair plant, a brickyard, an asphalt factory, mills, and an incubator poultry breeding station. There is a people’s amateur drama theater in the town.


Elan’ 

(in its upper reaches, Bol’shaia Elan’), a river in Voronezh Oblast of the RSFSR; a right tributary of the Savala River (Don basin). Length, 165 km; basin area, 3,630 sq km. Its sources are in the Oka-Don Plain; it flows along the plain’s southern border. It is fed largely by melted snow. The average annual discharge 26 km from the mouth is 6.8 cu m per sec.

Smith, two others, the hippopotamus, the giraffe, the bos caffer -- as large as a full-grown bull, and the elan -- but little less, two zebras, and the quaccha, two gnus, and several antelopes even larger than these latter animals.
Daim is the French for deer, and cerf for stag; elan is the true term, when one would speak of an elk.
