darmstadtium, artificially produced radioactive chemical element; symbol Ds; at. no. 110; mass number of most stable isotope 271; m.p., b.p., sp. gr., and valence unknown. Situated in Group 10 of the periodic table periodic table, chart of the elements arranged according to the periodic law discovered by Dmitri I. Mendeleev and revised by Henry G. J. Moseley . In the periodic table the elements are arranged in columns and rows according to increasing atomic number (see the ..... In 1994 an international research team led by Peter Armbruster and Sigurd Hofmann at the Institute for Heavy Ion Research at Darmstadt, Germany, bombarded lead-208 atoms with nickel-62 ions. In a two-week experiment, four atoms were unambiguously identified as an isotope of element 110 with mass number 269 and a half-life half-life, measure of the average lifetime of a radioactive substance (see radioactivity ) or an unstable subatomic particle. One half-life is the time required for one half of any given quantity of the substance to decay. They are technetium (at. no. 43), which was the first element to be synthesized, promethium (at. no. 61), astatine (at. no. How to thank TFD for its existence? It decayed after less than a millisecond by emitting an alpha particle, which consists of two protons and two neutrons, to create an iso tope of element 110 with an atomic mass of 273. The discovery of element 111 caps a remarkable season for the Darmstadt lab, which in November found element 110 (SN: 11/26/94, p. That intermediate atom then ejected a neutron, stabilizing itself for 270 microseconds as the long-sought element 110 before undergoing a unique chain of decays. |
