anonymous remailer
An organization that forwards e-mail anonymously stripping out the sender's name and e-mail address. Remailers are used by people that wish to express an opinion to newsgroups or to individuals without fear of excessive responses or retaliation. It is the same as dropping a letter in the post office without a return address. See Anonymizer.

It is capable of protecting mail traffic from being sniffed while it is being transmitted, but this does not actually involve encrypting the actual email because the content inside the email messages is capable of being revealed to, and thusly tampered with, by the email relays that are involved.
The worm will then attempt to forward itself onto other email addresses and vulnerable computers, attempt to disable anti-virus and security software, and install an email relay module which can be used by external hackers for sending spam.
The FTC said that "tens of thousands" of owners of open email relays or open proxies will be notified that they are running such servers, often regarded as a security hazard, and given advice on how to secure them.
