Emperor Moths

Emperor Moths 

the general name for several species of moths of the family Saturniidae. Saturnia pyri, one of the largest European moths, has a wingspread of up to 15 cm. It is found in the USSR in the central zone and in the south. The large larvae are green, with transverse rows of blue tubercles, each having two long, clavate hairs. The larvae live in fruit trees. Eudia pavonia is smaller than S. pyri and has a wingspread of up to 8 cm. It is widely distributed in the northern and temperate zones of Europe and Asia. The caterpillars, which have reddish yellow tubercles with short hairs, develop in various trees and shrubs.

Small tortoiseshell and speckled wood butterflies were on the wing, and later in the month they will be joined by day-flying emperor moths.
Maurice Pons reports male emperor moths with peacock butterflies at Leasowe last week, and orange-tip butterfly there this week, with speckled wood in Liverpool.
