gynecomastiaBreast enlargement in a male. It usually involves only the nipple and nearby tissue of one breast. More rarely, the whole breast grows to a size normal in a female. True gynecomastia is related to an increase in estrogens. Testicular or pituitary-gland tumours commonly cause gynecomastia. Similar conditions (pseudogynecomastia) are caused by excessive body fat, inflammatory disorders, granular lesions, or growth of tumours. Treatment involves hormone therapy, correction of the estrogen disorder, or tumour removal. gynecomastia [‚gīn·ə·kō′mas·tē·ə] (medicine) Abnormal enlargement of the mammary glands in the male. | Patients with a pituitary adenoma present with either an endocrinopathy or a mass effect. Endocrine therapies are omitted in recognition of the fact that endocrinopathy is an uncommon primary cause of erectile dysfunction except perhaps in aging men (see Schiavi, 1996). [1] There are two primary categories of the disease: monostotic fibrous dysplasia involves a single bone and represents 70% of all cases; polyostotic fibrous dysplasia involves multiple bones and makes up the remainder, [2] Also, approximately 3% of patients with fibrous dysplasia will experience McCune-Albright syndrome, in which the bony involvement is accompanied by skin lesions and endocrinopathy. |
