Enosis

a movement for union with Greece. The term enosis (union) came into use after an independent Greek state was formed in 1830 and Thessaly, Crete, Samos and other Greek lands that remained under Turkish control began demanding union with Greece. The movement was led by the Orthodox Church.

During the period of Turkish rule, which ended in 1923, and British rule, which ended in 1960, the Greek Cypriot movement for uniting Cyprus with Greece contributed to the development of the national liberation struggle in Cyprus. In the 1960’s and 1970’s in the Republic of Cyprus the ideals of enosis were upheld by nationalistic strata of the Greek community, whose actions impeded the regularization of relations between Greeks and Turks and the normal conduct of government affairs.
