A limited number of surveys have shown that pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and walruses) can be infected with zoonotic enteric bacteria, including Salmonella and Campylobacter spp.
Examples of coordinated bacterial behavior, such as the "swarming" movements of enteric bacteria, have been observed for almost 100 years.
Scientists have discovered that some enteric bacteria recognize when they are in a human host and respond by activating a particular set of virulence genes that enable the organism to colonize the host and contribute to the disease process.
