epicalyx [¦ep·ə′kā·liks]
(botany) A ring of fused bracts below the calyx forming a structure that resembles the calyx. Epicalyx in flowers, the lower outer row of small bracts of the calyx that alternate with the sepals. The epicalyx forms from stipules of the sepals. It is well developed in plants of the families Malvaceae (mallow, cotton) and Rosaceae (cinquefoil, strawberry). Want to thank TFD for its existence?
