epidoteAny of a group of colourless to green or yellow-green silicate minerals with the general chemical formula A2B3(SiO4)(Si2O7)O(OH), in which A is usually calcium (Ca) and B is generally aluminum (Al), although other elements are sometimes substituted. The epidote minerals occur as reaction products of other (earlier) minerals in low-grade (formed under relatively low-temperature, low-pressure conditions), regionally metamorphosed rocks, where their occurrence is used as an indicator of metamorphic grade. |

The mineralogy is 40% plagioclase (3% of which is myrmekitic), 29% quartz, 28% potassium feldspar (microcline and orthoclase), 3% biotite, with trace magnetite and rare epidote and chlorite. About a mile beyond Gilman Lake, you come upon the first of the two Hoover Lakes (9,800 feet), twin jewels in talus fields at the southeast foot of crumbling 10,964-foot Epidote Peak. Magnetite, epidote, chlorite and pyrite is associated with the copper mineralization. |
