Abnormal protrusion of the eyeball from the orbit.

Exophthalmos 

protrusion of the eyeball. Exophthalmos is most commonly caused by diffuse toxic goiter. It may also be caused by a tumor in the eyeball or adjacent regions, trauma of the eyeball, thrombosis of the orbital veins, and inflammatory diseases. If pronounced, exophthalmos may be accompanied by limited mobility of the eyeball and impairment of vision. Therapy is based on the cause of the condition.

Other symptoms may include exophthalmus, diplopia, and loss of visual acuity.
Thyroid function tests should not be performed without the presence of at least some supporting signs or symptoms of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism or thyroid mass (eg, tachycardia, bradycardia, tremor, fine or thick skin, sweating, weight changes, bowel changes, eyelid edema, exophthalmus, reflex changes, hearing loss, personality changes, swelling, thyroid masses, tenderness or prior abnormal thyroid function tests).
He was then 38 years old and presented with diffuse infiltration of the facial skin affecting the eyelids, mainly the right, which showed discrete exophthalmus (figure 1).
