expansion slot

A receptacle inside a computer or other electronic system that accepts a printed circuit board. The number of slots determines future expansion. See PC data buses.


expansion slot [ik′span·shən ‚slät]
(computer science)
A location in a computer system where additional facilities, especially circuit boards, can be plugged in to extend the computer's capability.

(hardware)expansion slot - A connector in a computer into which an expansion card can be plugged. The connector supplies power to the card and connects it to the data bus, address bus and control signals of the motherboard.
