the scientific method used to test an EXPERIMENTAL HYPOTHESIS by comparing an EXPERIMENTAL GROUP which has been subjected to an INDEPENDENT VARIABLE, with a CONTROL GROUP which has not. This is the method of choice in PSYCHOLOGY, but sociology has developed diverse methodologies to cope with less controllable data.
