extraordinary ray [ik′strȯr·dən‚er·ē ′rā]

(optics)

One of two rays into which a ray incident on an anisotropic uniaxial crystal is split; its deviation at the crystal's surface depends on the orientation of the crystal, and it is deviated even in the case of normal incidence.
