field-effect display [′fēld i‚fekt di′splā] (optics) A type of numerical display device in which a liquid-crystal cell is sandwiched between polarizers; the cell is treated so that it normally rotates light 90°, but ceases to rotate light when an electric field is applied to it, altering the transmission of the device.
