(building construction) Having noncombustible walls, stairways, and stress-bearing members, and having all steel and iron structural members which could be damaged by heat protected by refractory materials. (materials) The property of being relatively resistant to combustion. fireproof 1. Descriptive of a material or construction which is unburnable, or almost so; an absolute quality which does not exist; usually refers to a material or construction which is highly fire-resistant. 2.
