firing mechanism [′fīr·iŋ ‚mek·ə‚niz·əm] (engineering) A mechanism for firing a primer; the primer may be for initiating the propelling charge, in which case the firing mechanism forms a part of the weapon; if the primer is for the purpose of initiating detonation of the main charge, the firing mechanism is a part of the ammunition item and performs the function of a fuse.
