Production of molten metal or matte in a vertical furnace in which concentrates are reacted with hot gases; the molten product is collected in a horizontal refractory-lined accumulator at the base of the furnace.

The oxygen has been used in Jinlong Copper's flash smelting and converting process.
The second stage of the program is the expansion and modernization of the Company's copper smelter at Ilo, Peru, which will consist of installation of a new single line flash smelting furnace and a single line flash converting furnace to process approximately 1.
Whilst the flash converting furnace is being repaired, which is expected to take several weeks to complete, Kennecott will continue to produce matte copper from the flash smelting furnace.
