Mark the depth of the lock on the flat drill bit with sticky tape and drill overlapping holes down the centre line.
To plug the hole, either use a core drill to get a plug to fit the hole, or ensure that the flat drill is the same size as conventional dowelling.
Using a flat drill bit (sometimes called a speed bore) drill a series of holes along this line, close enough to each other to overlap.
