flatten layers
To bring all levels of a multi-layered image down to one plane. High-end graphics programs such as Photoshop provide a multi-layered file format that enables elements in each layer to be manipulated independently (see layers). In order to save the layered image in a graphics format such as TIFF, BMP or GIF, which support only one layer, the image must be flattened.

A PDF file is flattened to remove a transparency layer when the document is rendered in a printer or application that does not support the extra layer.
