Admiral of the Fleet

a naval military rank in the USSR and in certain other countries—for example, Great Britain.

This rank was adopted in the USSR on May 7, 1940. It was abolished on Mar. 3, 1955, in favor of the rank admiral of the fleet of the Soviet Union, but on April 28, 1962, it was restored and given equal status with corresponding ranks in the other armed forces—that is, general of the army and marshal of a branch of service.
