floodplain splay [′fləd‚plān ‚splā]

(geology)

A small alluvial fan or other outspread deposit formed where an overloaded stream breaks through a levee (artificial or natural) and deposits its material (often coarse-grained) on the floodplain. Also known as channel splay.
