A rod made from silver-activated phosphate glass and used in solid-state dosimeters; under irradiation the rod absorbs ultraviolet light and emits orange fluorescent light; measurement of the intensity of the emitted light with a photomultiplier gives a measure of the absorbed dose of radiation.
