Larger fiber chip causes surface tension to shear the molten glass at the fiber tip and thus distort the fusion splice geometry.
The fusion splice is accomplished by applying localized heating at the interface between two butted, prealigned fiber ends, causing the fibers to soften and fuse together to form a continuous glass strand.
Customer termination of installed fiber is possible with the splice-on version of the EL connector, where a factory terminated expanded beam insert is attached to the fiber using fusion splice technology.
