gableTriangular section formed by a roof with two slopes, extending from the eaves to the ridge where the two slopes meet. It may be miniaturized over a dormer window or entranceway. If the gable end projects above the roof level to form a parapet, the edge is often trimmed to form an ornamental silhouette (e.g., curved or stepped), as in Dutch town houses of the 16th and 17th centuries. In Asia, gables often feature projecting roof tiles and grotesque sculptures of animals at the ridge and eaves. gable 1. the triangular upper part of a wall between the sloping ends of a pitched roof (gable roof) 2. a triangular ornamental feature in the form of a gable, esp as used over a door or window 3. the triangular wall on both ends of a gambrel roof Gable (William) Clark. 1901--60, US film actor. Then, with a whistling note that rose above the droning of the pit, the beam swung close over their heads, lighting the tops of the beech trees that line the road, and splitting the bricks, smashing the windows, firing the window frames, and bring- ing down in crumbling ruin a portion of the gable of the house nearest the corner. |
